I have 20 years of experience teaching reading in public schools, tutoring centers and in private tutoring. I worked as a reading specialist in Arlington, Virginia and in St. Charles, IL before moving to Texas. I have done testing for the GT department in Katy ISD and, most recently, worked for Lamar CISD as a Reading Facilitator and Dyslexia Specialist. Prior to the first tutoring session, we will meet so that you can share your specific concerns, and things you would like me to know about your child. Next, your child will be assessed in the 5 areas of reading instruction outlined by the National Reading Panel. These include phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. This testing will last approximately two hours. Following the testing, we will meet again to review the results and recommendations. I will then design a diagnostic prescriptive reading program tailored to your child's specific reading needs. As a trained reading specialist, I provide more than tutoring for your child. I have the knowledge and experience necessary to teach your child to read using methods based on sound research. I will communicate with you weekly, and provide activities and suggestions to ensure consistency and continuity at home. Most children come twice a week for 50 minutes sessions, and most need at least three to six months of tutoring in order to make significant improvements. Reading improvement is ongoing, evolving and developmental. There are many factors that affect progress and patience is at the foreground. My mission is to help your child become a lifelong reader.
